In a bid to revive Libya’s stalled political process, Presidential Council members Mousa al-Koni and Abdullah al-Lafi held talks on Saturday with UN Special Envoy Hanna Tetteh, head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). The meeting focused on the latest developments in Libya’s political and electoral landscape and explored pathways to overcome the current impasse ahead of long-delayed national elections.
Tetteh presented a comprehensive briefing outlining a set of regulatory proposals being prepared for submission to the UN Security Council. She reviewed UNSMIL’s ongoing efforts — both domestic and international — to foster dialogue among Libyan factions and bring an end to the transitional phase through a legal and constitutional framework that ensures broad acceptance of the upcoming vote.
The discussion also touched on municipal elections and the logistical and political challenges surrounding them. Tetteh reaffirmed the mission’s continued support for Libya’s reconciliation process, which she said had reached advanced stages, and stressed the importance of coordination with the African Union.
Al-Koni and al-Lafi reiterated that any roadmap or political solution must be rooted in Libyan ownership and built on consensus to safeguard national unity and institutional integrity. They emphasized the need for support from both domestic actors and international partners to create a conducive environment for any future agreement.
The Presidential Council, through its two deputies, reaffirmed its commitment to backing UNSMIL’s efforts and expressed support for any dialogue that expands national participation and lays the foundation for lasting stability in Libya.
