Security Forces Destroy Labubu Dolls in Sabha

The Security Directorate of Sabha has announced the destruction of a quantity of “Labubu” dolls confiscated from local shops, citing their incompatibility with societal and religious values.

In an official statement, the directorate described the dolls as a harmful cultural phenomenon and pledged to continue monitoring commercial outlets to prevent their circulation.

Origins and Rise of Labubu

Labubu first emerged in 2015 as part of “The Monsters” series, inspired by Norse mythology and created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung. However, the doll’s global breakthrough came in 2024 after appearing alongside Lisa from the K-pop group Blackpink, propelling it into the lifestyle of international celebrities.

With its oversized eyes, pointed ears, and protruding teeth, Labubu’s surreal design has been described by fans as a blend of “cuteness and oddity.” Initially marketed as a quirky accessory, the doll quickly evolved into a pop culture icon and fashion statement. Yet its eerie appearance has drawn criticism online, with some users branding it “disturbing” and unsuitable for children.

Labubu dolls are typically sold in “blind boxes,” where buyers remain unaware of the specific model inside until opening the package—an element that adds to their mystique and appeal.

Viral Fame and Social Media Backlash

The doll’s popularity exploded on platforms like TikTok and YouTube, where it featured in trending clips characterized by exaggerated movements, loud sounds, and distorted visuals. Often presented in a humorous or satirical context, Labubu’s grotesque aesthetic has raised concerns about its psychological impact on young viewers.

Critics argue that the doll targets children, particularly those of preschool age, who are increasingly exposed to content not designed for their emotional or cognitive development. Labubu’s rise was further cemented by collaborations with toy retailer Pop Mart, its primary distributor, and endorsements from stars like Rihanna and Dua Lipa, who incorporated it into their fashion styles.

In the Arab world, Labubu has rapidly gained traction, becoming a must-have item and sparking widespread engagement across social media.

Pricing and Market Dynamics

Although Labubu first appeared in retail markets in 2019, its resurgence in 2025 has reignited demand. While some models are available as inexpensive keychains, rare editions can fetch up to 300 Australian dollars on eBay, with select pieces listed for as much as 1,580 dollars on Pop Mart’s website.

Labubu’s commercial success is staggering, with global sales surpassing one billion dollars, solidifying its status as a flagship product of China’s toy industry.

The dolls’ limited distribution and artistic blend of childhood innocence with horror aesthetics have created a sense of scarcity, further driving consumer interest. Meanwhile, TikTok influencers have begun shifting attention to “Wakoko,” a new competitor doll with a lower price point, which has stirred its wave of controversy and fashion buzz in 2025.

Psychological Impact on Children

Labubu’s unsettling design and chaotic presentation have prompted warnings from mental health professionals. According to a study by Schneider et al., published in Child Psychiatry and Human Development, repeated exposure to frightening visual stimuli, even in comedic or cartoonish format,s can heighten nighttime anxiety, disrupt sleep patterns, and trigger generalized fear in children under nine.

The American Psychological Association has also highlighted the vulnerability of preadolescent children to overstimulating content, noting that their developmental stage limits their ability to distinguish fantasy from reality. As a result, what may be intended as playful or ironic can imprint as genuine fear, activating the autonomic nervous system and provoking anxiety responses.

In 2021, the World Health Organization called for stricter oversight of audiovisual content aimed at children, urging the promotion of alternatives that foster emotional security and a sense of belonging, rather than shock or distortion disguised as entertainment.

A Cultural Moment Demanding Scrutiny

Regardless of branding or design, dolls like Labubu represent a cultural phenomenon that warrants serious reflection, especially when their influence reaches vulnerable audiences. Social media platforms frequented by children must also come under closer scrutiny, with calls for responsible curation of the content being broadcast.
