UN Special Representative Hanna Tetteh, accompanied by Deputy Political Affairs Chief Stephanie Khoury, toured three polling stations in Tripoli on Saturday to observe the conduct of Libya’s municipal elections and meet with staff from the High National Elections Commission and election monitors.
The visit included stops in Tripoli Central and Hay al-Andalus municipalities, while Deputy Special Representative and Resident Humanitarian Coordinator Ines Chouma visited a polling center in Souq al-Jumaa.
Elections were held in 26 municipalities across the country. Tetteh commended the professionalism of election staff and observers, emphasizing the importance of peaceful and credible voting as a means for Libyans to choose their local leaders.
The visit came amid reports of attacks on election offices in Zliten, Zawiya, and the Western Coast, which resulted in damage to electoral materials in seven municipalities. The UN mission condemned the incidents as “unacceptable” and called for a secure environment to ensure free and orderly elections
