The Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported that the United Nations has issued Greece’s official response to the memorandum submitted by Libya regarding the delimitation of disputed economic zones south of Crete.
According to the paper, Athens, in a diplomatic note dated 5 August, denied Libya’s claims of sovereignty violations and breaches of international law, affirming its full sovereign rights over the continental shelf and its resources in the area.
Greece stated that the designation of the exploration blocks “Crete 1 and 2” was based on the median line between Libya and Greece, under the Exclusive Economic Zone agreement signed with Egypt on 6 August 2020.
Athens also rejected Libya’s proposed boundary line, arguing that it contradicts the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.
