The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) has confirmed that a rocket was fired near its compound in Tripoli during a live briefing by Special Representative Hanna Tetteh to the UN Security Council. The incident occurred without causing damage to the mission’s facilities.
In its official statement, UNSMIL reported receiving accounts of the projectile launch during the briefing session. While the compound itself remained unaffected, the mission expressed deep appreciation for the swift response and vigilance of Libyan security authorities, who promptly launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
UNSMIL reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting Libya’s path toward peace, stability, and the rule of law. The attack, which coincided with the presentation of a new UN roadmap for resolving Libya’s political crisis, has heightened concerns over the safety of diplomatic missions and underscored the urgency of institutional reform.
The Libyan Ministry of Interior has since confirmed the seizure of a vehicle loaded with additional rockets and a launch base, and pledged to pursue those responsible.
