North Africa–Europe Hydrogen Corridor “SoutH2” Excludes Libya Due to Lack of Green Capacity

10

According to the economic platform “Attaqa”, several major European companies are advancing feasibility studies for a large-scale hydrogen corridor linking North Africa to Europe. The initiative aims to facilitate the export of green hydrogen from select Arab countries to European markets.

The corridor will initially include Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt, while Libya has been excluded due to its current lack of environmentally sustainable hydrogen production capacity.

The first phase of the project is expected to connect with Algeria’s energy grid, given its geographic proximity to Italy. Oversight will be provided by five leading European energy firms: Italy’s Snam, Austria’s TAG, Slovakia’s Eustream, Czechia’s Net4Gas, and Germany’s OGE.

The plan outlines a 2030 launch date, contingent on the completion of technical preparations and infrastructure upgrades required for cross-border hydrogen transport.
