(UNSMIL), Mohamed al-Asadi expressed concern about the serious developments in Tripoli. He affirmed that the mission is working to achieve progress in negotiations aimed at avoiding any armed conflict and protecting the capital from any potential risks.
In a statement to “Al-Massar” TV, Al-Asadi indicated that the mission supports the efforts of the Security and Military Arrangements Committee (SMAC), which is working under the supervision of the Presidential Council to calm the situation.
UNSMIL had previously issued a statement expressing its deep concern over the continued mobilization of troops and heavy weapons around Tripoli, the country’s most populous city. The statement confirmed that talks on the security arrangements were ongoing.
The mission called on all parties to exercise restraint and continue dialogue to resolve differences to avoid escalation or endangering civilians. It stressed that any use of force could lead to violent confrontations and urged the authorities to prevent any clashes from breaking out to avoid potential harm to civilians.
