In his first public interview since assuming the role of Chief of Staff of the Libyan Armed Forces, General Khaled Haftar emphasized that constructing a capable military is essential to protecting national security and laying the foundation for internal stability, despite ongoing arms embargoes.
Speaking to Youm7 newspaper in an interview Haftar revealed that the Armed Forces now control over three-quarters of Libya’s territory, following the defeat of terrorist groups that had exploited the military. This success, he noted, was achieved through Operation Dignity.
On regional cooperation, Haftar highlighted Libya’s strategic relationship with Egypt, rooted in shared security interests and counterterrorism efforts. He affirmed that Libya continues to benefit from Egyptian military expertise in training and capacity-building.
Haftar also pointed to the adoption of modern curricula in military colleges and academies, citing the establishment of “Al-Mushir Military City” as the largest of its kind in North Africa, an embodiment of the Armed Forces’ modernization drive.
Addressing domestic challenges, he identified the proliferation of weapons outside state control as the primary cause of conflict in Tripoli. He reiterated the military’s commitment to restoring security and social peace, expressing hope that Libya will emerge as a regional model of stability and progress.
On international affairs, Haftar condemned the crimes committed against the Palestinian people, calling it a stain on humanity’s conscience. He urged the global community to take a firm stand to end the bloodshed and alleviate Palestinian suffering.
