Protests Shake Afriqiyah Airways as Board Faces Calls for Dismissal

Tensions are mounting within Afriqiyah Airways as employees launch a protest movement demanding the immediate dismissal of the current board of directors, whose legal mandate expired months ago. Staff accuse the board of attempting to extend its tenure through questionable means despite repeated failures in financial and operational management.

This escalation comes ahead of a decisive general assembly meeting scheduled for Saturday, where the future leadership of the airline is expected to be determined.

Severe Operational Breakdown

Employees revealed that the airline is currently operating with just one aircraft, serving limited routes between Tripoli, Benghazi, Sabha, and Misrata. The rest of the fleet has been grounded due to mounting debts and the board’s inability to meet insurance and maintenance obligations. This collapse has resulted in the loss of key destinations and a significant decline in revenue, severely damaging the company’s reputation and regional standing.

Concerns Over Asset Liquidation

Staff expressed alarm over signs of potential asset liquidation, including the sale of aircraft and company-owned buildings, all taking place in an environment lacking transparency and accountability. They also warned against transferring $57.7 million—allocated for settling previous debts—to the current board, arguing that such a move could worsen mismanagement.

Demands for Urgent Reform

Protesters are calling for the immediate suspension of the current board and the appointment of a new management team. Their demands include a full investigation into financial and administrative files, a halt to any asset sale or lease procedures, and the development of a clear, time-bound strategic recovery plan to restore operations and stabilize the company.

They emphasized that the airline supports over 1,600 Libyan families and remains a vital pillar of domestic and regional air transport.

General Assembly at a Crossroads

All eyes are now on Saturday’s general assembly meeting, where the current board is expected to face intense pressure for removal. Stakeholders are urging the appointment of a qualified and experienced leadership team capable of reviving the fleet, improving financial performance, and restoring trust among employees and investors alike.
