Schooling for many Mauritanian children in Libya has been disrupted following new instructions from the National Examination Center, which require all public and private schools to deny admission to non‑Libyan students for the 2024/2025 academic year unless they hold valid residency permits.
In response, the Mauritanian community office in Tripoli issued an urgent appeal to the authorities in Nouakchott, calling for swift action to conduct a comprehensive census of Mauritanians living in Libya and to safeguard their children’s right to education.
The office noted that Mauritanians had previously benefited from exemption from school fees under a reciprocity arrangement with Libyan students in Mauritania. It urged the Mauritanian government to re‑establish this coordination with its Libyan counterpart.
The statement further stressed the importance of enabling community members to regularize their legal and administrative status and to expedite the issuance of essential civil documents, ensuring their fundamental rights, foremost among them the right to education
