Dabaiba: Municipal Elections Lay the Groundwork for National Vote

In a formal ceremony held in Tripoli on Thursday, Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dabaiba oversaw the swearing-in of 298 elected members from 35 municipal councils, marking the completion of the second phase of Libya’s local elections. The event was attended by government ministers, diplomats, and senior officials from the Ministry of Local Governance.

Dabaiba used the occasion to underscore the broader national implications of the municipal vote, describing its success as proof of Libya’s ability to conduct major electoral processes. He emphasized that the outcome sends a clear message: the Libyan people are ready for presidential and parliamentary elections and will not tolerate any attempt to undermine their right to choose their leaders through the ballot box.

The Prime Minister warned against efforts to obstruct the electoral path, stating that those who seek to derail it will be held fully accountable. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to direct elections as the only viable route to ending political division and achieving national unity.

The newly sworn-in councils represent a wide geographic spread, including municipalities in Greater Tripoli, the Western Region, and the Nafusa Mountains, as well as towns and cities such as Zliten, Nalut, Sabratha, Surman, Al-Ajilat, and the various branches of Zawiya
