Libya Expands International Cooperation at UN General Assembly

On the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Acting Foreign Minister of Libya’s Government of National Unity, Taher Al-Baour, held a series of meetings aimed at strengthening Libya’s international partnerships and advancing dialogue on key regional and global issues.

Political and Regional Consultations with Portugal
Al-Baour met with Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel to discuss avenues for enhancing bilateral cooperation between Libya and Portugal. The two officials exchanged views on pressing international developments, including the situation in Gaza, the occupied Palestinian territories, and irregular migration. Al-Baour expressed appreciation for Portugal’s recognition of the State of Palestine, emphasizing its significance in supporting Palestinian rights. The meeting also addressed Libya’s internal political landscape and the Government of National Unity’s efforts to unify institutions and promote stability.

Human Rights and Conflict-Related Violence
In a separate meeting, Al-Baour conferred with Ramila Patten, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict. Discussions focused on the UN mission’s efforts to prevent and respond to conflict-related sexual violence, with an emphasis on protecting women, supporting survivors, and ensuring their rights. Both parties underscored the importance of international cooperation in strengthening protection programs and delivering justice for victims, aligning with Libya’s commitment to institutionalizing mechanisms to combat sexual violence in conflict zones.

Strategic Partnership with Kyrgyzstan
Al-Baour also met with Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev to explore opportunities for expanding bilateral relations in political, economic, and investment sectors. The two ministers reviewed regional developments, including the situation in Gaza, and agreed to maintain ongoing consultations and joint efforts to build a strategic partnership across multiple domains.
