On the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Libya—represented by Taher Al-Baour, Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation—took part in a high-level ministerial meeting hosted at the European Union Mission. The gathering brought together representatives from the United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Denmark, and other European nations, alongside Arab and African countries and key international and regional organizations, including the United Nations, the African Union, and the League of Arab States.
The meeting focused on the deteriorating situation in Sudan, with participants reaffirming that a comprehensive Sudanese-led dialogue remains the only viable path to ending the ongoing conflict. They discussed joint efforts to de-escalate tensions and secure a ceasefire between the warring parties.
Delegates emphasized that there is no military solution to the Sudanese crisis and underscored the need for coordinated regional and international action to safeguard Sudan’s unity and sovereignty. They called for robust support for a peaceful political process that would pave the way for inclusive Sudanese dialogue and a constitutional transition.
The role of the African Union was highlighted as central to resolving the crisis, in close cooperation with the European Union and the United Nations. The European Union, in particular, urged both parties to exercise restraint and pursue peaceful solutions that serve the interests of the Sudanese people. It also outlined its efforts to take concrete steps to protect civilians and vital infrastructure, reaffirming its commitment to peace in the region.
In closing, participants stressed the importance of international support for regional initiatives aimed at achieving peace and stability in Sudan, ensuring civilian protection, and advancing non-military solutions across the region.
